H.E.M. Faure Gnassingbé and King Charles III strengthen the London-Lome axis

President Faure Gnassingbé was received on Thursday October 20, 2022 at Buckingham Palace by King Charles III.

A formal visit which is part of Togo’s official Commonwealth membership ceremony which will take place in the afternoon in London.

The two personalities spoke of the strengthening of cooperation between Lomé and London. It was part of the ceremony to raise the Togolese flag at the Commonwealth headquarters.

« I am delighted with the quality of the interview I had, this Thursday, October 20, 2022, with His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, » said President Faure Gnassingbé.

During the interview with the new British sovereign, the Togolese president mentioned the strengthening of cooperation between Lomé and London, in the sectors of security, peace and the environment. The two leaders reaffirmed during the exchanges, their commitments to consolidate this cooperation.

Faure Gnassingbé is staying in London as part of the official ceremony to raise the Togolese flag at Commonwealth headquarters. The delegation he led to England attended the Commonwealth headquarters at Marlborough House for this ceremony which marks Togo’s official entry into the now strong organization of 56 states around the world.

Togo has been admitted to the Commonwealth since June 25, at the same time as Gabon, whose flag was hoisted on Monday October 17.

Togo’s accession to this organization, which is mostly made up of former British territories, is, according to the Togolese authorities, a diplomatic opportunity, which makes it possible to decompartmentalize the country’s relations with the outside world.

Similarly, the public authorities explain that it offers an economic opportunity since a new market of nearly two billion consumers is open in Togo.

Note that on the sidelines of the ceremony of raising its flag, Togo has planned a session during which its main economic, cultural and social characteristics will be presented.

It should be noted that Charles III is the head of the Commonwealth.
